In a major reform initiative aimed at enhancing revenue generation and ensuring transparency, the Punjab government has decided to establish a Special Unit within the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA). The move is part of a broader effort to modernize the province’s tax administration and expand the revenue base through technology-driven governance.
According to details, the new PRA Special Unit will comprise sectoral experts, tax consultants, legal advisors, and data analysts, who will work together to improve tax compliance, identify new revenue streams, and enhance efficiency using data analytics and digital monitoring tools.
The government has also approved the recruitment of 130 enforcement officers and decided to expand PRA’s operational scope to 30 districts across Punjab. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has set a deadline of October 30 for completing the expansion process, directing that Additional Deputy Commissioners (General) be assigned additional responsibilities to support PRA functions at the district level.
In addition, the inclusion of 19 new sectors into the provincial tax net is under review. To improve accessibility for taxpayers, the PRA has launched a dedicated mobile application aimed at facilitating online payments and easing compliance procedures.
Chairing a high-level meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that “honest taxpayers should not be harassed; instead, they should be encouraged.” She reaffirmed her commitment to promoting transparency and accountability within the provincial tax system.
During the meeting, PRA Director General Mazam Ali Supra presented a detailed briefing on tax targets and the inclusion of new sectors. Officials said the new unit would focus on leveraging technology, improving enforcement, and developing innovative revenue models to strengthen Punjab’s fiscal base.
