The Punjab School Education Department has extended the summer holidays across the province. According to Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, all public and private schools will now reopen on September 1. This new date pushes back the previous reopening date of August 14.
The decision was made in response to the rising temperatures. The summer holidays had already been moved up to May 28 from the original June 1 start date due to a heatwave. During that time, school hours were also shortened, with all educational institutions instructed to close two hours early at 11:30 am. Last year, schools in the province had also closed for a week in May due to extreme heat and for several weeks in November because of high smog levels.
Meanwhile, schools in Sindh have already reopened. According to a notification from the Sindh government in May, summer vacations for educational institutions were scheduled from June 1 to July 31.
