Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) submitted a dossier and letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday, presenting “undeniable evidence of widespread electoral rigging in the general elections of 2024.”
Statement from the Opposition Leader
Opposition Leader and PTI’s Omar Ayub wrote on X that the “letter and dossier were delivered to the IMF mission in Islamabad.” He added that a copy of the letter, the dossier, and the Pattan report on the 2024 general elections were also forwarded to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi.
IMF’s Technical Mission Visit
The IMF’s technical mission is currently visiting Pakistan to conduct a governance and corruption diagnostic assessment (GCDA). The mission will review six key governance sectors and institutions, according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance.
PTI’s Position
In the letter, Ayub referred to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s meeting with the IMF delegation on July 7, 2023, where Khan emphasized the need for free and fair elections. PTI’s submission claims that state institutions, including the Election Commission of Pakistan, suppressed PTI and manipulated electoral outcomes, undermining democracy and constitutional governance.
Ayub stressed that these concerns are significant for political and economic stability, and the international community should be made aware of them.
Preparation for a Meeting with IMF
Ayub further stated that PTI is ready to meet with the IMF delegation to provide any further information or clarification.
Meeting Between IMF Technical Team and Chief Justice
The IMF delegation also met with CJP Yahya Afridi to discuss the judicial framework of Pakistan. The CJP briefed the delegation on efforts to enhance judicial performance and affirmed the judiciary’s independence.
The IMF delegation acknowledged the judiciary’s role in maintaining legal stability and expressed its appreciation for ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance and accountability.
