Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is once again attempting backchannel talks with the establishment, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur reportedly playing a key role in the effort.
According to sources, Gandapur is leveraging his connections to revive dialogue. However, PTI Information Secretary Waqas Akram Shaikh has denied any such initiative.
PTI’s Interest in Negotiations
Despite the denial, sources insist that PTI is keen on restarting negotiations, viewing Gandapur as the central figure in making this happen. So far, there are no signs of interest from the establishment.
The military has maintained its stance of non-involvement in political matters, stating that political parties must resolve their issues through dialogue.
Imran Khan’s Letters and Military’s Stance
Recently, Army Chief General Asim Munir dismissed reports of receiving a letter from Imran Khan, stating that even if such a letter arrived, he would forward it to the prime minister rather than read it.
Since August 2023, Khan has been imprisoned on multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism. He has written three open letters to the army chief, covering issues like alleged election rigging, crackdown on PTI workers, and economic challenges.
PTI Leaders’ Meeting and Speculations
Recently, Ali Amin Gandapur and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan met with General Asim Munir, sparking speculation about possible political discussions. However, government and security sources insisted that the meeting was unscheduled and focused solely on security issues.
While Khan reportedly saw this as a step towards negotiations, Barrister Gohar remained cautious, stating that only security concerns were discussed.
Some media reports suggested that another follow-up meeting took place between PTI and establishment figures, but sources denied these claims, saying PTI leaders met a federal minister instead.
Khan’s Aggressive Stance and International Lobbying
While leaders like Gandapur are advocating for backchannel engagement, Imran Khan continues to take a hardline stance against the establishment. His three open letters are widely seen as provocative.
Meanwhile, a senior PTI leader, speaking anonymously, revealed that PTI’s foreign wing is lobbying in Washington to pressure Pakistan for Khan’s release. He also warned that the European Union might take action against Pakistan over alleged human rights violations reported by PTI.
