US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that India had offered the United States a trade agreement that proposed “no tariffs.”
New Delhi is aiming to finalize a trade deal with the US within the 90-day pause on tariff increases for major trading partners announced by Trump on April 9. This pause had included a 26% tariff on goods from India.
“It is very hard to sell in India, and they are offering us a deal where basically they are willing to literally charge us no tariffs,” Trump said during a meeting with executives in Doha.
The United States is India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to approximately $129 billion in 2024. The current trade balance favors India, which has a $45.7 billion surplus with the US.
