Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home. Preliminary post-mortem reports indicate no external injuries. The couple, both 95, were discovered on Wednesday, and the cause and manner of their deaths are still under investigation.
Official autopsies and toxicology reports are pending, with tests for carbon monoxide and other toxins requested. While foul play is not initially suspected, authorities have not ruled it out. The scene was described as suspicious enough to warrant a full search and investigation.
Sheriff’s officials found no signs of struggle or forced entry, and believe the couple had been deceased for some time. Scattered pills were found near Arakawa’s body in the bathroom, along with an open prescription bottle, a space heater, and a deceased dog. Hackman’s body was found in another room, and investigators suspect he may have collapsed. Two other healthy dogs were found on the property.
A 911 call from a caregiver led to the discovery. The caregiver reported seeing two unresponsive individuals through a window. There were no immediate signs of a carbon monoxide or natural gas leak.
A search warrant was issued to look for potential flammable materials, controlled substances, weapons, DNA, and other evidence. The New Mexico Medical Investigator’s office expects the final cause of death reports to take 4-6 weeks.
The Hackman family released a statement expressing their devastation at the loss. Gene Hackman, known for his versatile and powerful performances in films like “The French Connection,” “Unforgiven,” and “Superman,” will be honored at the upcoming Academy Awards.
