The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday predicted the onset of the first heatwave of May starting today, with conditions expected to persist for the subsequent three to four days.
The department forecasts that a high-pressure system is likely to grip most parts of the country on the 15th.
Under the influence of this meteorological condition, daytime temperatures are likely to remain 4°C to 6°C above the seasonal norm in the southern half of the country (Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan) from May 15th to 20th.
Furthermore, daytime temperatures are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal in the upper half of the country (central & upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan) from the 15th to the 19th.
The weather department also indicated that a westerly weather system is anticipated to enter the upper regions of the country on the evening or night of May 19th.
This system is expected to bring rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms (with isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms) to Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region including northeast Punjab, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan from May 19th to 20th.
Precautions During Heatwave Conditions
The general public, particularly children, women, and senior citizens, are advised to take precautionary measures due to the impending heatwave conditions across the country.
It is recommended to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during the daytime and to maintain adequate hydration.
Farmers are advised to manage their agricultural activities in consideration of the weather conditions and to ensure the well-being of their livestock.
Rising temperatures in the northern areas may accelerate the rate of snowmelt during the forecast period.
Judicious use of water is requested across all aspects of life.
Additionally, the PMD has advised all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to prevent any adverse situations arising from the heatwave conditions.
