A petition has been lodged with the Islamabad High Court, seeking the parole-based release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, citing significant security risks amidst escalating regional tensions with India.
Filed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the petition asserts that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi views Imran Khan as his foremost adversary and might resort to targeting Adiala Jail with a drone strike as an act of reprisal.
“India has executed drone attacks on numerous cities. Under such circumstances, the life of the PTI founder is in severe jeopardy while incarcerated,” the petition declares. It further contends that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Imran Khan exposed Modi on global platforms, resulting in international embarrassment for him.
The plea argues that prolonged detention in politically motivated cases infringes upon Imran Khan’s fundamental rights. It points out that the Constitution permits parole in instances where a prisoner’s health or safety is endangered.
The petition also emphasizes Imran Khan’s exemplary behavior during his imprisonment, noting the absence of prison rule violations and maintaining that his continued confinement poses threats to his declining health. It adds that a formal request had already been submitted to the Punjab Home Department, but no action was taken.
Referencing pertinent provisions of the Constitution, international legal precedents, and prison regulations, the petition implores the court to deliberate on releasing Imran Khan on parole.
