Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) commenced direct flight operations from Lahore to Baku, Azerbaijan, on Sunday, marking a significant stride in its endeavors to strengthen international connectivity and boost tourism.
According to a statement released by the airline, the inaugural flight signifies the launch of a new route, representing a “milestone in the national carrier’s strategy to expand its international network and enhance connectivity between Pakistan and Central Asia.”
“This initiative also reflects the growing diplomatic and economic ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, aiming to boost tourism, trade, and people-to-people linkages,” the statement further elaborated.
To commemorate the occasion, a special inauguration ceremony was held at the International Departure Lounge of Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.
The event was presided over by Minister for Defence, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and was graced by the presence of the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Asif remarked that the positive outcomes of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen relations with various nations are now becoming evident.
He stated that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s economy is progressing on a path of advancement after navigating through challenging times.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his delight at the launch of PIA’s direct flights from Lahore to Baku. In a statement, he emphasized that the initiation of direct air travel between Lahore and Baku would significantly contribute to the promotion of the tourism sector.
The Prime Minister further indicated that the national carrier would soon commence direct flight operations with other friendly nations as well.
Terming this development a significant diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, he highlighted that Azerbaijan is one of Pakistan’s closest allies in the region. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fostering collaboration with Azerbaijan in the realms of tourism and other sectors.
