The U.S. Department of Defense, known as the Pentagon, has given its approval for supplying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. This move could significantly change the dynamics of the war.
The approval follows repeated requests from Ukrainian President Zelensky. He has been asking for these advanced weapons to target critical Russian energy and infrastructure targets deep inside Russia.
However, Pentagon officials clarified that the final decision to send the missiles must be made by U.S. President Donald Trump. They also assured that this potential supply would not harm America’s own weapon stockpiles.
The Tomahawk missile is a powerful weapon that can strike targets up to 1,000 miles (about 1,600 km) away. It can be launched from both ships and submarines.
This development has caused serious alarm in Moscow. According to U.S. media, Russian President Putin expressed his deep concerns in a phone call with President Trump. Putin warned that these missiles could pose a direct threat to major Russian cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. He added that sending them would seriously damage relations between Russia and the U.S.
U.S. defense officials noted that even with this approval, important details, such as deployment and training for Ukrainian forces, are still being discussed.
