Three law enforcement officers were shot and killed, and two others were critically injured in Pennsylvania on Wednesday during a confrontation with a gunman who was also fatally shot by police, officials reported.
According to State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris, the shooting occurred in Codorus Township, a community in York County, southeastern Pennsylvania. The officers were returning to the site of an earlier police investigation. “They were there to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday,” he told reporters at a news conference, adding that the investigation was “domestic-related,” but declining to provide further details.
Three officers died, while the two others were taken to a nearby hospital where they are in critical but stable condition. At least one local news outlet reported that the officers were attempting to serve a search warrant when the shooting took place.
Paris confirmed that police shot and killed the suspect. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the shooter or the law enforcement agencies the officers belonged to.
Governor Josh Shapiro, who visited the hospital to pay his respects to the fallen officers, said, “This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County, for the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” He asked for prayers for the victims’ families, adding, “It’s important for you to know that these families who are grieving right now… how proud they are of their loved ones who put on the uniform to keep us safe.” Shapiro also noted that he had received a call from US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who offered federal support.
