The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather advisory, warning residents of continued thunderstorms and light rainfall across Punjab until April 20th.
This alert comes following a tragic spell of severe weather that resulted in the deaths of nine citizens and left five others injured.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, two fatalities were reported in Layyah and Kot Addu due to lightning strikes, while two houses sustained partial damage from the recent windstorm. Given these recent losses, the PDMA is strongly urging all residents to be extra cautious during these unpredictable weather patterns.
Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners, deputy commissioners, and rescue teams to remain on high alert and prepared for any situation. PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that both the Provincial Control Room and the District Emergency Operation Centres are fully operational and are monitoring the weather situation around the clock.
“All personnel, including machinery from Rescue 1122 and other emergency services, must be on standby,” stated DG Kathia. He also strongly advised citizens to stay indoors during stormy conditions and to avoid going anywhere near electric poles or exposed wiring.
“Seek safe shelter immediately to protect yourselves from lightning. Never venture out under an open sky when thunderstorm activity is anticipated,” he warned. The PDMA DG reminded the public of the devastating impact of lightning last April, which claimed the lives of 30 people in Punjab.
Special instructions have also been issued concerning the safety of children, with parents advised to keep them away from any weak or abandoned buildings. In case of any emergencies, the public is urged to contact PDMA’s dedicated helpline at 1129.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has also issued its own weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds in several districts of Islamabad and Punjab on April 18th and 19th.
This alert was released in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), cautioning residents about the potential for severe weather conditions.
According to their advisory, significant rainfall and hail are expected in areas including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, and Jhelum. The NDMA also identified districts such as Faisalabad, Jhang, Khushab, Mianwali, Lahore, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Sheikhupura as being particularly vulnerable to strong winds and hailstorms.
