The saying goes that a child is the embodiment of their ancestors’ virtues. As I sit here, reminiscing about my life, I am reminded of the rolling hills, the trenches, the valleys, and the deserts I traversed, all while my heart yearned to be born in a small village, just like Muhammad Azhar, Faruk Yaqub, and Hamid Shahid. The truth is, if I had my way, I would have been born in Azhar’s house and village. My father, a well-read and well-educated man, was an English teacher, and despite his familiarity with Urdu, Arabic, and Persian, he would speak the local dialect at home, instilling in me a love for the land and its people. I would walk to school with him, wearing a traditional cloak, and our conversations would be filled with stories of our ancestors.
But, I was born and raised in the city, surrounded by high-rise buildings, and I often find myself reminiscing about the simplicity of rural life. I recall the stories of famous Pakistani writers, like Bulleh Shah, who was born in a small village but was educated and influenced by the local culture. I wonder what would have happened if I had been born in a similar setting, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the wisdom of our ancestors.
My father’s influence on my life cannot be overstated. He was a man of great integrity, and his values have stayed with me throughout my life. I remember how he would teach me the importance of honesty and hard work, and how he would always encourage me to pursue my dreams. His love for our ancestors and their stories has also had a profound impact on my life, and I have always sought to learn more about our history and culture.
As I look back on my life, I am reminded of the stories of other Pakistani writers, like Faruk Yaqub and Hamid Shahid, who have also drawn inspiration from their rural upbringing. Their stories are a testament to the power of nature and the importance of staying true to one’s roots. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my own story, and I hope that it will inspire others to do the same.
