Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi successfully conducted a corneal transplant using a deceased donor’s eyes. According to a spokesperson, 17-year-old Sher Ali had donated his corneas after his passing. The spokesperson stated that Sher Ali was brought to SIUT due to a brain aneurysm, and after obtaining the family’s consent, his corneas were donated to two patients on January 7. The procedure restored the vision of a 45-year-old and a 21-year-old patient.
SIUT’s spokesperson said that Prof. Adib Rizvi, a renowned transplant surgeon, honored Sher Ali’s family by expressing his gratitude. Prof. Rizvi stated that thinking of others is the highest form of humanity, and he encouraged others to participate in the organ donation movement.
The spokesperson added that Sher Ali had a long-standing relationship with SIUT, as his mother had donated her kidney to him eight years ago when he was just 8 years old. According to the spokesperson, Sher Ali’s kidney functioned well for ten years before he was diagnosed with kidney disease again and was placed on dialysis. Sher Ali’s father had also donated a kidney to his nephew in the past.
