Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has accepted the government’s request to maintain the same electricity tariff for the entire country, including Karachi, for 2026. According to the announcement, NEPRA has notified the federal government to notify the new basic electricity tariff from January 1, 2026.
NEPRA held a hearing on the government’s request for uniform tariffs for the entire country, with the Power Division submitting a request for a uniform tariff for 2026. NEPRA imposed a penalty on the Power Breakdown in January 2023 for failing to restore power, and the decision maintains a higher tariff of Rs. 47.69 per unit for household consumers, as well as Rs. 10.54 per unit for protected consumers up to 100 units.
The protected consumers’ tariff of Rs. 13.01 per unit will remain for consumers using 101 to 200 units, while Rs. 22.44 per unit will remain for non-protected household consumers up to 100 units. The monthly tariff of Rs. 28.91 per unit will remain for consumers using 101 to 200 units, Rs. 33.10 per unit for consumers using 201 to 300 units, Rs. 37.99 per unit for consumers using 301 to 400 units, and Rs. 40.22 per unit for consumers using 401 to 500 units.
A source stated that newspapers have released a leaked audit report, which is based on the year 2023 and the previous government, and claims that the current government has reduced the previous year’s 584 billion rupees in losses to 191 billion rupees in just one year. Several distribution companies in Pakistan provide electricity, including the Electric Power Company of Pakistan.
The monthly tariff of Rs. 41.62 per unit will remain for consumers using 501 to 600 units, Rs. 42.76 per unit for consumers using 601 to 700 units, and Rs. 47.69 per unit for consumers using more than 700 units. According to NEPRA, the tariff for monthly consumers up to 50 units will remain at Rs. 3.95 per unit, while the tariff for monthly consumers using 51 to 100 units will remain at Rs. 7.74 per unit.
Earlier, NEPRA had approved a reduction in the basic electricity tariff for 2026, with the Power Division submitting a request for a uniform tariff for the entire country. Justice Yousuf Ali Said stated that the government’s written response is awaited, and the entire matter will be reviewed.
