The Pakistan government has withdrawn the Special Economic Zone Amendment Ordinance 2026, announced a statement. The statement further revealed that Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif had advised the President to withdraw the ordinance under Article 89/2 of the Constitution. Prior to this, the Prime Minister had sent the ordinance to the President for approval, but the President failed to sign it within 15 days, after which it automatically came into effect. In the National Assembly today, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) staged a protest against the approval of the ordinance without the President’s signature.
PPP’s Nawid Qamar stated that for the first time the government has enforced an ordinance that did not receive the President’s approval, and this law has no status in the country. In such circumstances, the PPP will not participate in the Assembly, and the party has withdrawn from the Assembly.
Minister of Law Azam Naqvi made it clear that the government will not enforce the ordinance until it receives the President’s approval. PPP’s member of the National Assembly, Abdul Qadir Patel, stated in a conversation with Geo News that the PPP has objections to the Special Economic Zones Ordinance, which was issued without the President’s approval. According to the flight schedule, flights from Lahore to Abu Dhabi have been canceled, as well as flights from Islamabad to Sukkur.
