Pakistan installed its national flag in front of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) chamber on Thursday as it began its eighth term as a non-permanent member (2025-26) of the 15-member body.
Along with Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia joined as new non-permanent members, with their flags installed at the UNSC’s stakeout at the UN Headquarters in New York. These new members replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland whose terms ended on December 31, 2024.
Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, installed the national flag during the ceremony. In his remarks, Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that Pakistan would continue to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, focusing on international peace, security, and friendly relations among nations.
Pakistan will take over the UNSC presidency in July 2025 and will also be seated on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee, tasked with designating individuals and groups as terrorists and imposing sanctions.
The UNSC, regarded as the most powerful body of the UN, has 15 members, five of which are permanent (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States). The remaining 10 non-permanent seats rotate every two years.
