The PMDC’s new regulation seeks to enhance the quality of dental education in Pakistan, ensuring graduates are better prepared for professional practice. Universities, including the leading UHS Lahore, have been informed of this update, and it will take effect from the 2024 academic session. The fifth year of the BDS program will now serve as a clerkship, followed by a year of mandatory house job, ensuring a more comprehensive training experience for future dentists.
This move is expected to improve the credibility and recognition of Pakistan’s dental degrees globally, aligning them with international standards. The expansion of the program also addresses the growing need for more practical training in the medical field, especially in dentistry, where hands-on experience is critical.
In response to the new policy, dental institutions across Pakistan are already preparing to adapt their curricula and training schedules. This reform is seen as a major step towards enhancing the quality of healthcare professionals in the country.
