Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has started deliberations on increasing electricity prices by 48 paisas per unit, following a 22% surge in electricity demand. The country’s electricity consumption has risen to 2.4 billion units in December 2025 due to increased industrial and agricultural demand. Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari stated that the burden of electricity rates on industries has been reduced to zero, as per the guidance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The reduced dependence on grid stations due to the rapid expansion of solar energy has raised concerns about increasing production costs, while industrial consumers have opposed price hikes. According to power authorities, Pakistan has recorded a 22% increase in electricity consumption compared to the previous year, primarily due to strong demand from industrial and agricultural sectors. All routes from Dera Ghazi Khan (DG Khan) to Punjab and Balochistan have been closed.
