Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a telephonic discussion with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, during which both leaders deliberated on the evolving situation in the Middle East. They collectively stressed the imperative of achieving a peaceful resolution through sustained dialogue and diplomatic efforts.
A statement released by the Prime Minister Office (PMO) indicated that PM Shehbaz conveyed Pakistan’s profound apprehension regarding the ongoing regional developments. He “underscored the pressing necessity for a return to tranquility via diplomatic engagement.”
During their conversation, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to supporting Iran across all international platforms, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The PMO further highlighted that he emphasized the critical importance of upholding international law and the fundamental principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
In response, President Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude to PM Shehbaz for his outreach and commended Pakistan’s consistent and principled stance in solidarity with Iran amidst the prevailing crisis.
He also acknowledged Islamabad’s constructive role in fostering peace and averting further escalation in the region.
Both leaders concurred on the significance of unity within the Muslim world to effectively address current geopolitical challenges. The statement concluded by noting their pledge to maintain close communication and coordination moving forward.
The Volatile State of the Iran-Israel Ceasefire
US President Donald Trump had announced a “complete and total ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, but its precise status remained ambiguous as Tel Aviv alleged that Tehran had conducted missile attacks in breach of the truce.
Nonetheless, the US President declared the truce effective after reprimanding both Israel and Iran for their respective ceasefire violations.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office stated that it refrained from conducting further strikes on Iran following President Trump’s call. Concurrently, Iran’s supreme security body asserted that a ‘powerful military response compelled the Israeli regime to unilaterally cease its aggression.’
Trump’s announcement followed a limited missile strike launched by Iran on Monday against a US military base in Qatar, in retaliation for American aerial bombardments of its nuclear facilities.
Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia welcomed the ceasefire announcement, which came after a 12-day conflict between the two Middle Eastern adversaries.
