OpenAI is reportedly working on a new hardware device specifically designed for artificial intelligence (AI). According to reports, this device could serve as a replacement for smartphones.
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has announced that the company is collaborating with Jony Ive, the former chief designer of Apple, to develop this AI-focused device.
As per the reports, this device will use generative AI to perform tasks and interact with users in a way that is more efficient than current software.
Last year, reports suggested that the new AI device being developed by OpenAI and Jony Ive would have a smaller social impact compared to the iPhone.
Sam Altman also discussed the potential of using large language models (LLMs) on smartphones and questioned their affordability.
He believes that a cheaper version of the new AI device may not be the best solution since most people are already willing to pay for a phone. According to him, convincing users to carry a second device, even if it is affordable, would be difficult.
Currently, major companies are focusing on adding AI features to existing smartphones rather than developing entirely new devices.
