HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Hurricane Beryl’s assault on southeast Texas may have caused damage to Houston’s NRG Stadium.
On Monday, multiple Eyewitness News crews observed what appeared to be a hole in a grooved section of the venue’s retractable roof.
NRG Stadium officials, who stated they were awaiting a full assessment before disclosing a damage report.
Beryl made landfall overnight in Matagorda County as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph before moving north-northeast through Houston. Wind gusts around NRG Park were recorded closer to 60 mph during Beryl’s arrival.
The 22-year-old stadium has faced hurricane-related damage in the past. Hurricane Ike, a Category 2 storm that made landfall in September 2008, caused extensive damage to the venue’s roof. At the time, the stadium’s general manager reported that the storm had torn chunks off the retractable roof, forcing the postponement of an upcoming Ravens-Texans game.
