According to a U.S. Navy official, military personnel and local law enforcement did not find any active shooter at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The academy was placed on lockdown on Thursday following reports of security threats.
Naval Support Activity Annapolis security and local law enforcement responded to reports of suspicious activity on the Naval Academy grounds at 5:07 p.m. ET.
An official statement confirmed, “There is no active shooter threat; however, one person was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building.” The injured individual was medically evacuated and is in stable condition. According to reports, the injured person was a Naval midshipman. Some sources suggest a law enforcement officer mistakenly shot the student, believing they were a threat.
Fox News had previously reported that gunshots were heard on campus. Naval Support Activity Annapolis had stated earlier on Facebook that the base was on lockdown “out of an abundance of caution” due to “reports of threats made to the Naval Academy.”
This incident occurred just one day after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a university in Utah, an event that President Donald Trump called a “heinous assassination.” This has fueled heightened anxiety about political violence across the country.
