The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned a horrific massacre in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, during an emergency meeting held to address the collapsing situation in Sudan. Diplomats and top UN officials expressed deep alarm over large-scale civilian killings attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a harrowing briefing, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha, told the council that the “situation in Sudan is horrific” and has descended into “chaos.”
She reported that the UN Human Rights Office has witnessed widespread and serious human rights violations in and around El Fasher. The crisis is so severe that a communications blackout is in effect, making it impossible to determine the true number of casualties.
Painting a desperate picture, Martha stated, “No one is safe in El Fasher. There is also no safe way for civilians to leave the city.”
Reports indicate that brutal atrocities against civilians have been ongoing since the RSF took control of the city. An estimated 177,000 civilians are currently trapped, unable to reach safety and facing a dire humanitarian catastrophe.
