Nigeria’s internet consumption soared to 973,455 terabytes in December 2024, marking a 36.5% year-on-year increase from 713,200 terabytes recorded in December 2023.
This total data usage amounted to approximately 998.79 million gigabytes, reflecting the country’s growing digital demand.
The Nigerian Communications Commission released the data on Friday, highlighting a 10.75% increase in internet usage between November and December 2024.
Internet subscriptions rose to 139.28 million in December, up from 136.54 million the previous month, reinforcing the upward trend in connectivity.
Broadband penetration stood at 44.43% at the end of 2024, falling short of the 70% target set under Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), which is nearing expiration.
The country concluded the year with 164.9 million active telecommunications subscribers, a significant decline from 224.7 million recorded a year earlier.
MTN Nigeria, the nation’s largest telecom operator, expanded its market share to 51%, with its subscriber base increasing to 84.6 million in December from 81.2 million in November, solidifying its dominant position.
Airtel Nigeria’s customer base also witnessed an increase, climbing to 56.6 million from 55.4 million.
Meanwhile, Globacom, which faced regulatory challenges earlier in the year, gained 500,000 subscribers, bringing its total to 20.1 million.
9mobile maintained a 1.99% market share, concluding the year with 3.2 million subscribers.
