A new wildfire broke out north of Los Angeles near Castaic Lake, rapidly spreading to over 9,400 acres (38 square km), forcing more than 31,000 people to evacuate.
The Hughes Fire grew quickly, reaching two-thirds the size of the Eaton Fire, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and dry brush. Authorities warned the Castaic Lake area was under an immediate life-threatening risk.
The fire prompted evacuation orders for 31,000 people, with another 23,000 under evacuation warnings. In anticipation of fast-moving fires, 1,100 firefighters were deployed across Southern California.
