LAHORE: Amidst the current political upheaval in the country, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif has decided to reengage in active politics to counter the rising popularity of jailed PTI leader Imran Khan, sources revealed on Tuesday.
According to a minister, Sharif plans to embark on a nationwide tour to revitalize the party. He will begin his journey in Balochistan, followed by visits to Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab, focusing on reactivating the party and supporting loyal workers and leaders.
This move comes after a recent senior leadership meeting in Lahore where a strategy for grassroots reorganization was proposed. Sharif’s reactivation includes overseeing the party’s efforts and addressing vacant party offices, with plans to hold rallies across the country in the second phase.
There has been a perception that Nawaz Sharif’s role in the PML-N diminished to a ceremonial one after the formation of Shehbaz Sharif’s government. Senior leaders, including his daughter Maryam Nawaz, have urged him to become more involved in party matters.
A party insider noted that Sharif’s return to active politics is also driven by the need to address the political landscape dominated by non-democratic forces. Sharif has recently instructed both the federal and provincial governments to consult the party on key decisions and enhance its role in governance.
PML-N Punjab President and PM’s adviser Rana Sanaullah emphasized that the government’s decision-making process should shift from bureaucratic to political, reflecting Nawaz Sharif’s influence and concerns about the current political environment.
