The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall for Karachi and other parts of Sindh from August 17 to 23. In its latest weather advisory, issued today (Sunday), the Met Office stated that strong monsoon winds are entering parts of the province.
As a result, rain with thunderstorms, including some moderate to heavy isolated showers, is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Tharparkar, and their surrounding areas.
For Karachi specifically, the weather department predicts rain with thunder and lightning on Monday and Tuesday, with some areas possibly experiencing heavy downpours. The Met Office has warned that the heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning could disrupt daily life, cause urban flooding, and lead to water logging in low-lying areas. It also warned that the weather might damage vulnerable structures like poorly built homes, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels. Farmers have been advised to plan their activities according to the forecast.
Weather Outlook for Other Regions
The new forecast for Sindh comes as northern parts of the country have already faced widespread destruction and a death toll exceeding 300 due to heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides.
The weather department also expects isolated heavy downpours in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, and Kashmir. Rain is also anticipated in northeast/south Balochistan, south Punjab, and southeast Sindh during the evening and night.
Meanwhile, the water flow at the Guddu and Sukkur barrages remains at low flood levels, while the Kotri Barrage is reported to be stable and flowing normally.
