According to a report by the American publication Bloomberg, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun avoiding encounters with US President Donald Trump. The report suggests Modi is skipping international events where a meeting with Trump is likely.
The core reason, alleges the magazine, is Modi’s fear that President Trump will once again publicly claim credit for mediating the ceasefire between Pakistan and India. India does not officially accept Trump’s version of events, and the report notes that Trump’s “blunt style” on the matter could cause “embarrassment” for Modi.
Bloomberg states that the Indian Prime Minister is unwilling to take this risk, especially at a sensitive time during the crucial state elections in Bihar. The report points to Modi’s decision to skip the recent ASEAN summit in Malaysia as evidence of this avoidance strategy.
The magazine highlights that Donald Trump has claimed credit for the ceasefire “more than 50 times.” In sharp contrast, Prime Minister Modi has maintained complete silence on the subject, despite facing intense pressure, ridicule, and accusations of “cowardice” from the Indian opposition.
Bloomberg further contrasted India’s stance with Pakistan’s, noting that Pakistan not only acknowledged Trump’s role in the ceasefire but also nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize as a result. In response, Trump has frequently praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, calling them “great personalities.”
