In another shocking incident of political violence in Mexico, the newly elected mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, has been shot and killed. The tragic event occurred while he was attending a local festival, surrounded by numerous people. Disturbingly, Manzo had taken his oath of office only one week prior.
According to foreign media, Manzo, 40, was participating in a local “Day of the Dead” festival in the central part of Michoacán state when he was targeted.
Mexico’s Public Security Agency confirmed in a statement that two individuals connected to the murder have been arrested. However, the alleged gunman reportedly committed suicide to avoid capture.
The slain mayor, Carlos Manzo, was known for being a vocal critic of his federal government.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed to bring Mayor Manzo’s killers to justice.
This assassination is part of a deeply troubling trend of escalating violence against politicians in Mexico. Earlier this year, in June, Martha Laura Mendoza, a mayor from the ruling Morena party, was also murdered. Before that, in May, the personal secretary to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada was shot and killed in the capital.
