Meta Platforms has announced the establishment of a new division within its Reality Labs unit, focusing on developing AI-powered humanoid robots designed to assist with physical tasks.
The move highlights the company’s increasing emphasis on robotics and artificial intelligence.
In an internal memo, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth revealed that the newly formed robotics product group would focus on research and development of “consumer humanoid robots” with the goal of “maximizing Llama’s platform capabilities.”
Llama refers to Meta’s primary AI foundation models, which power a growing range of generative AI products across its social media platforms.
The robotics division will be led by Marc Whitten, the former CEO of the self-driving car company Cruise.
Bosworth confirmed in the memo that Whitten has been appointed as Meta’s Vice President of Robotics.
