MESQUITE, Texas — A Mesquite Police officer is on administrative leave following accusations of providing false information and misusing his police laptop in connection with a shooting investigation involving his father and an alleged stalker.
Wylie police have issued two arrest warrants for 39-year-old Officer Brian Hill. A detailed probable cause affidavit reveals the background leading up to the shooting.
The Back Story
According to the affidavit, Officer Hill reported to Wylie Police that his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend had been stalking and harassing them. Hill claimed he had documented the ex-boyfriend setting fire to his personal motorcycle weeks earlier in Dallas.
The document further explains that on June 25, Hill’s girlfriend informed him that the ex-boyfriend had followed her to a relative’s apartment, attempting to force his way through the gate. Hill drove by the apartments in his marked Mesquite Police car and spotted the ex-boyfriend in a white Chevy Malibu, which then drove away.
Hill reported seeing the Malibu again shortly after, and, concerned that the ex-boyfriend might know his address, he called Wylie Police to report someone following them.
The Shooting
Around 2:00 a.m., Wylie Police spoke with the driver of the white Chevy Malibu, who had dogs in the car. The driver could not explain his presence in Wylie and denied any issues with Mesquite officers.
“We responded, determined there was no offense involving that person, and released him. The shots were fired probably not even 5 minutes later,” said Ofc. Alexandra Waters, spokesperson for the Wylie Police Department.
At approximately 2:35 a.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 100 block of S. Ballard Ave. They found the Malibu parked in the street with a bullet hole in the rear driver’s side door, but the driver was unharmed and visibly upset. The driver, while uncooperative, claimed to have seen a man in a white Audi SUV who fired a shot.
As officers investigated, the victim spotted Hill’s patrol car and shouted, “I got you bi**h.” Hill was not considered a suspect in the shooting, as he was with officers at the time. It was later discovered that Hill’s girlfriend had previously had her tires slashed.
Through surveillance footage and cell phone records, police identified Hill’s father, 65-year-old Darvin Hill, as the shooter. Darvin Hill was arrested on July 11 and charged with deadly conduct-discharge of a firearm.
The Officer’s Involvement
Initially, Officer Hill denied knowing anyone involved but was later found to have had contact with his father before and after the shooting. Investigators discovered that Hill used his police laptop to access vehicle registration information and share it with his father, which was not permissible.
Officer Hill has been charged with misuse of official information and making a false statement to a peace officer. He turned himself in to the Wylie Municipal Jail following the issuance of two arrest warrants.
The Mesquite Police Department has stated on Facebook, “We are cooperating fully with the Wylie Police Department’s investigation, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave.”
