During the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, the Duchess of Sussex welcomed IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima as her guest.
Discussing her experiences in Hollywood, Meghan, who gained prominence for her role as Rachel Zane in Suits, revealed that her appearance, specifically her freckles, impacted the job opportunities she received, as they did not align with the industry’s prevailing standards at the time.
Prince Harry’s wife shared with Jamie, “I was an auditioning actor, trying out for commercials, and I recall my commercial agent being unable to submit me for beauty or skincare advertisements because I had freckles.”
She elaborated, “They would say: ‘No, no, it’s just never going to work because freckles aren’t considered a sign of beauty.’ It was simply that you couldn’t see yourself represented there.”
The Duchess of Sussex, who has both African-American and Caucasian heritage, added, “Oh my gosh, oh please. I heard ‘No’ constantly, particularly because I didn’t fit neatly into a specific category.”
Meghan further shared with the IT Cosmetics founder, “And, at the beginning of my auditioning career, you were either cast as the Black girl, the white girl, or the Latina girl. Everything was typecast, so being of mixed heritage meant I could get into many rooms, but as a numbers game, I heard ‘no’ even more frequently.”
Notably, Meghan Markle, who married Prince Harry in 2018, has been in the news for her recent business ventures, including the Netflix show With Love, Meghan, her lifestyle brand As Ever, and her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder.
