HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A former Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable is implicated in an alleged theft ring targeting high-end cars and trucks. Although the former deputy has not been arrested, four others were charged and detained last week.
The suspects identified in court documents are Ramon Gallegos, Angel Rodriguez, Ronald Romero, and Ramiro Cerda. Investigators claim the group targeted trucks valued between $70,000 and $90,000, using specialized equipment to disable anti-theft devices.
Records suggest the former deputy used Precinct 5 computer systems to check if a vehicle had been reported stolen and then passed that information to the suspects. The deputy was the subject of an internal investigation and was terminated three weeks ago. is withholding his name as he has not been criminally charged.
Among the victims are Dr. Tony Brothers and his wife Becky, who had driven their GMC truck from Florida to Texas for Dr. Brothers to receive cancer treatment at MD Anderson. The truck was stolen from their hotel in League City.
“The police said it was likely a professional job,” the couple remarked.
“Unfortunately, it happens a lot out there, and we likely won’t see our truck,” Dr. Brothers added.
The couple had to purchase airline tickets to return to Florida. While disappointed, they are not angry.
“Yes, it’s disappointing when you see folks that are police officers. You’re hoping they’re taking care of us,” Dr. Brothers said. “Unfortunately, there are bad seeds in every field.”
“That’s why it was such a shock,” Becky Brothers added. “We felt super safe in League City.”
