In Houston, Texas, Mayor John Whitmire is determined to tackle crime head-on, emphasizing, “We want the bad guys… and we will find them.” Having campaigned on the platform of improving public safety, Mayor Whitmire has been actively working towards this goal during his first month in office.
In an Action 13 town hall titled “The First 30 Days,” Mayor Whitmire and Houston Police Chief Troy Finner sat down with ABC13’s Tom Abrahams to discuss their strategies and accomplishments in addressing crime and public safety, a major issue in the 2023 mayor’s race.
During the town hall, Mayor Whitmire highlighted the importance of collaboration with over 80 law enforcement agencies outside Houston to share intelligence and combat violent crime effectively. He emphasized that crime knows no boundaries and expressed his commitment to pursuing criminals regardless of jurisdiction.
Chief Finner echoed Mayor Whitmire’s sentiments and expressed concerns about repeat offenders being released onto Houston streets, emphasizing the need for greater accountability for violent crimes.
The town hall also addressed community concerns about issues such as road rage and block parties, with Mayor Whitmire outlining his plans to address these issues based on feedback from the community.
