Patients at Mayo Hospital continue to experience a critical shortage of medicines, despite a surprise visit by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and subsequent government actions.
While the CM’s visit was intended to alleviate the crisis, patients and their families report no improvement, with essential medications still unavailable.
Following the visit, the Punjab government allocated Rs340 million for medicine procurement. However, the health minister maintained that there was “an ample stock of medicine available,” contradicting patient accounts.
In response to the escalating crisis, the hospital’s CEO and Medical Superintendent were dismissed, and the chief pharmacist was suspended.
Despite these personnel changes and the release of funds, patients are still forced to buy medicines from private pharmacies and undergo tests at private labs.
The Punjab government has also authorized the use of funds for salaries, allowances, and filling vacant positions to support medicine purchases, aiming to resolve the shortage and ensure the hospital’s future functionality.
