For an actor, discussing a “big risk” usually refers to a daring career choice or an unconventional role. However, Academy Award-winning star Matthew McConaughey revealed that in his life, the ultimate risk was deeply personal.
Appearing on Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom podcast, McConaughey disclosed that the “biggest risk” he ever took was getting married to his wife, Camila Alves.
The actor dated Camila for six years and welcomed two of their three children before they officially tied the knot. He explained that his hesitation stemmed from a deep-seated fear of committing himself to one person for life. It was a piece of advice from his pastor that shifted his perspective.
The Interstellar star recalled the pastor’s pointed counsel:
“My pastor goes, ‘Let me just ask you this, Mr. Risk Taker. What’s the bigger risk? Carrying on like you’re going, or taking the deeper dive into the sacrament covenant of marriage… a covenant between you and her and God? That will be a whole new adventure in itself.’”
Hearing the wisdom, Matthew decided: “I was like, oh, the getting married’s a bigger risk.”
It was then that the actor resolved to propose to his now-wife. “I didn’t want to do it because that’s what you’re supposed to do. I didn’t want to do it by the book,” he stated, emphasizing the personal conviction behind the commitment.
Following their marriage in June 2012, Matthew and Camila welcomed their third child that December.
