Former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been implicated in a legal case alongside 90 other individuals, as reported by Bangladeshi media. Mortaza, who is also a Member of Parliament, is accused in connection with attacks on students during recent protests. His father is also named in the case, which was filed by Sheikh Mustafa Al-Muzahidur Rahman at the Narail Sadar police station.
This legal development follows a murder case filed against another former Bangladesh cricket captain, Shakib Al Hasan, who did not return to Bangladesh after his tour of Pakistan and traveled to England via Dubai.
Mashrafe Mortaza, who retired from cricket and entered politics with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League in 2018, was elected as an MP from the Narail-2 constituency. On August 6, protesters reportedly set fire to Mortaza’s house amidst the chaos following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country. Local media also reported vandalism of the District Awami League office and the house of its President Subash Chandra Bose.
Shakib Al Hasan, along with 147 others, faces charges related to the alleged murder of a garment worker during the protests in early August. The case was filed by Rafiqul Islam, the father of the deceased Mohammed Rubel. Shakib, a former member of parliament for the Awami League, and other party officials, including Sheikh Hasina and several former ministers, are among the accused.
Both cricketing legends now find themselves entangled in significant legal and political controversies amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
