Despite his deep bond with longtime comedy partner Steve Martin, Martin Short already has a backup plan if he ever needs to replace Martin. In a recent interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*, the 74-year-old comedian quickly responded when asked who he would choose if he had to fill Martin’s shoes.
“Oh, I’d phone Billy Crystal,” Short replied, demonstrating his quick wit. In contrast, Steve Martin, when asked a similar question in the Apple TV+ documentary *Steve!*, said he’d likely quit rather than consider any replacements.
Short, however, couldn’t resist a playful jab at his friend, recalling a joke from their show where they each deliver the other’s eulogy. “I miss you so much, although Billy’s been looking so great in rehearsal,” he quipped.
The comedy duo, who recently attended the premiere of *Only Murders in the Building* season four, have shared a long and successful partnership, from iconic films like *The Three Amigos* and the 1991 *Father of the Bride* remake to national tours, including their acclaimed 2018 show *Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life*.
