Manchester United have confirmed spending a total of £14.5 million ($18.3 million) on sacking manager Erik Ten Hag, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and other football staff, according to the club’s latest financial results released on Wednesday.
This sum is listed under “exceptional items” in the financial results for the quarter ending December 31.
The 20-time Premier League champions continue to struggle this season, sitting in 15th place in the league table following a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham on Sunday. The club remains just ahead of West Ham and Wolves, both near the relegation zone.
The decision to dismiss Ten Hag in October came just 116 days after his contract extension until 2026, making it a costly move. His departure was followed by the abrupt exit of Dan Ashworth, who had only joined United from Newcastle in July, further adding to the financial burden.
According to United’s financial report, the severance package for Ten Hag and his staff amounted to £10.4 million, while Ashworth’s departure cost an additional £4.1 million. A press release from the club confirmed that the total cost related to Ten Hag and various staff members’ exits stood at £14.5 million.
