HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A man has been apprehended in connection with the fatal stabbing of a driver, one of two random knife attacks that occurred in a north Harris County neighborhood, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Wednesday in the 2500 block of Sandlewood Trail Lane, located in the Silverglen North neighborhood.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office initially responded to a weapons disturbance call around 4:40 p.m. When deputies arrived, they discovered a man with a knife wound to his chest. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The suspect was arrested at 5:25 p.m. after deputies used a Taser to subdue him.
Investigators reported that the suspect was standing in the street holding a knife and a stuffed animal, attempting to flag down passing motorists. The first victim, a woman, was stabbed but managed to drive away and survived. The second victim, a man, also drove away but was found later at his home, approximately five to ten miles away. Family members discovered him in his car in the driveway, where he collapsed after they removed him from the vehicle, according to HCSO Homicide Sgt. Sidney Miller.
Authorities believe the 49-year-old suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, did not know the victims and that the attacks were random. The suspect does not reside in the neighborhood, and investigators are exploring the possibility of mental illness as a factor.
The identity of the deceased victim, estimated to be around 40 years old, has not been released by the HCSO.
