Indian authorities in Madhya Pradesh have demolished the home of Haji Shahzad Ali, a senior Muslim politician, following his protest against alleged Islamophobic remarks made by Hindu religious leader Pandit Ram Giri Maharaj.
The demolition occurred after Maharaj made controversial statements about Islam at a recent event. Instead of addressing the remarks, officials targeted Ali’s residence with bulldozers.
Congress party leader Priyanka Gandhi condemned the action, calling it “severe injustice” and “completely unacceptable.” She demanded an end to such practices, which have increasingly targeted minority communities in India.
Over the past two years, reports indicate that more than 150,000 homes have been demolished and 738,000 people displaced due to similar actions against Muslims and other minority groups. The incident has sparked renewed debate about the treatment of minorities in India and has drawn criticism from opposition parties and human rights organizations.
