Psychologists have sounded a serious alarm against the rapidly growing trend of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots for personal advice and emotional support. They warn this behavior is making people “socially isolated, mentally weak, and emotionally imbalanced.”
According to reports, individuals who rely on AI for guidance are not only experiencing increased rates of depression and anxiety, but their real-world decision-making abilities are also being compromised.
Renowned psychologist Professor Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Afridi stated that these chatbot interactions lack true “empathy” and “sincerity.” He warned that when people discuss their problems with machines instead of family or friends, they receive “machine answers.” This can worsen anxiety and depression, and in some cases, has even been linked to suicide.
On the user side, individuals report turning to chatbots because they “fear being judged” or having others form opinions about them. However, experts, including Dr. Asma Ahmed, argue this is also fostering “narcissism” (self-obsession), as the AI is designed to agree with the user, reinforcing the idea that their opinion is the only one that matters.
Experts strongly advise “digital detoxification,” reducing screen time, and prioritizing human connection for emotional support, stating that there is no substitute for another human being.
