Wildfires surrounding Los Angeles spread to Hollywood Hills, causing the deaths of at least five people, destroying hundreds of homes, and prompting the evacuation of 100,000 people.
The city is being hit from both sides as strong winds and dry conditions exacerbate the fires, depleting firefighting resources and causing water shortages. A new fire broke out in Hollywood Hills, scorching 50 acres (20 hectares) of land.
On the west side of Los Angeles, the Palisades Fire has burned 15,832 acres (6,406 hectares), destroying hundreds of structures in the hills between Santa Monica and Malibu.
