While speaking with Emma Chamberlain of Vogue, New Zealand singer and songwriter Lorde shed light on the deeper meaning of her 2025 Met Gala ensemble, hinting at her current understanding of her gender identity.
“This is custom Thom Browne, [and] this is my creation. It’s something of an Easter egg,” Lorde explained to Emma, adding, “More will be revealed.”
She elaborated, “I just love the open back. It really represents where I’m at, gender-wise. I love it. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?”
The “Ribs” singer’s statement echoed her previous interview with Document Journal, where she discussed with Martine Syms how her song “What Was That” aligned with her “gender broadening.”
“Becoming single, but also really facing my body stuff head-on, and starting to feel my gender broadening a little bit. Just being back in my house and feeling this big wave of grief. I just kept thinking, What was all of that?” she recalled.
The collaborator on “Girl, So Confusing” also stated, “I was also coming into my masculinity a bit more as well.”
“Seeing that as I was also coming into my masculinity a bit more as well. That became the thing we would say to each other while making music,” Lorde further mentioned at the time.
