NBC 5 is deeply saddened by the passing of Doug Adams, a longtime colleague and influential leader in the newsroom, who died on June 30 at his home in Denver at the age of 73.
Born in Pampa, Adams graduated from LD Bell High School and the University of North Texas before embarking on a distinguished career in journalism.
Following his college years, Adams launched his career at WBAP radio, marking the beginning of a 30-year journey in journalism. Transitioning to television, he joined KXAS-TV as a reporter and steadily advanced into news management, eventually serving as Dallas Bureau Chief and news director.
“His career path was truly inspiring,” remarked his family in his obituary.
In 1991, Adams was appointed station manager at NBC 5, a role he held until his retirement from the industry in 2000.
Post-retirement, Adams contributed his leadership talents as general manager of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, followed by serving as president and CEO of the Colorado Symphony. He also made significant contributions as national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and held board positions with organizations such as The United Way, Salvation Army, and the Leukemia Society of Dallas.
Describing him as a devoted husband, supportive father, and cherished brother, Adams’s family highlighted his love for exploring the Colorado outdoors, golfing, and treasuring time with his wife, Pamela.
“His integrity, kindness, and visionary spirit touched the lives of all who knew him,” his family wrote.
Adams is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and grandson. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas.
