NA Speaker Rejects Demand for Rs1 Million Salaries
Last Salary Increase Took Place Seven Years Ago
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Finance Committee has approved a significant raise in the salaries and privileges of Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and senators, bringing their monthly compensation to Rs519,000.
According to parliamentary sources, an informal meeting led by NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and attended by senior members of major parties, including PPP, PTI, and PML-N, discussed and approved the proposal.
The speaker has forwarded the finance committee’s recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final approval.
The adjustment aligns lawmakers’ salaries with those of federal secretaries and matches the benefits received by Punjab Assembly members.
Parliamentarians reportedly demanded a salary of Rs1 million per month, but this proposal was turned down by Speaker Sadiq.
It was noted that the last increase in lawmakers’ salaries was approved seven years ago, adding Rs15,000 to their monthly pay.
Notably, despite their political differences, all major parliamentary parties were in agreement on the salary increase.
In December, the Punjab Assembly also passed a bill to raise salaries significantly, increasing members’ pay from Rs76,000 to Rs400,000 per month.
The salaries of Punjab Assembly’s speaker and deputy speaker were increased to Rs950,000 and Rs800,000, respectively, while provincial ministers’ salaries were raised to Rs960,000.
