The Grammy Award-winning singer Laufey has recently stated that she is more than just a jazz icon. Known for her third album, A Matter of Time, Laufey is often labeled a “Gen Z jazz icon,” but she prefers not to be confined to a single genre.
In an interview with Vogue.co.uk, she explained, “My music is a derivative of Jazz. I am a Jazz singer and I love Jazz music, but I wouldn’t say I’m the face of current Jazz.”
The “From The Start” hitmaker added that her music is a “mishmash of Jazz and classical and bossanova and pop.” She doesn’t like to “put myself in a box, even if it is a Jazz box.” She also gave a shout-out to other artists, like Samara Joy, who she believes truly embody the genre.
Laufey also expressed a newfound self-belief, stating she has never “believed in myself more than I do now” and is proud of creating art that is true to herself. She recalled advice she received as a child: “the things that make you weird are the things that are going to make you stand out.” She added that it’s “so cool how I’ve stuck to my guns and created a career out of it.”
For her album, Laufey worked at the late Jimi Hendrix’s renowned Electric Lady Studios in New York, a experience she said was critical to shaping her work. She mentioned that working there “almost changed the course of my album” and felt “so honest to my artistry in a time where I was really wondering where to sail the ship.”
