At least five firefighters sustained injuries on Sunday while battling a significant fire at a factory in the Landhi Industrial Area.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, the blaze erupted in the early hours of the day at a factory situated in the Landhi Export Processing Zone. The fire rapidly intensified and spread to three adjacent factories due to the presence of highly flammable materials.
Officials stated that the firefighters were injured when a section of the affected building collapsed, leading to the fire being classified as “third degree.”
Rescue personnel confirmed that the injured Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) firemen were promptly transported to the hospital, with one individual reported to be in critical condition.
They also noted that the factory contained a stock of textiles, chemicals, and various other items, though the precise cause of the fire remains undetermined.
A total of 14 fire tenders, two snorkels, and one bowser were deployed to the scene for rescue operations.
The emergency service department reported receiving the information about the fire at 4:50 AM.
The buildings damaged by the fire have been declared unsafe.
The service’s Chief Operating Officer informed the media that rescue efforts were hampered by dense smoke and a scarcity of water.
Last month, a garments factory near Murtaza Chowrangi in Landhi also experienced a fire, resulting in the destruction of millions of rupees worth of inventory.
That incident involved a sudden eruption of flames in a multi-storey factory, which quickly escalated, prompting immediate deployment of police and rescue teams.
Firefighters utilized smoke injectors to ventilate the building and clear toxic fumes. The fire was brought under control after approximately three hours of continuous work.
