Residents of Lahore are facing another cost-of-living shock as tandoor (oven) owners have immediately increased the price of naan and khameeri roti (traditional leavened breads) by 5 rupees. The new price has been set at 30 rupees.
Aftab Aslam Gill, the President of the Muttahida Naan Roti Association, attributed the decision to a staggering increase in the cost of fine flour (maida).
He explained that the price for a sack of fine flour has surged by 4,500 to 5,000 rupees. According to Gill, the Punjab government has stated it is not involved in this specific flour price hike, forcing the association to pass the cost on to consumers.
However, Gill clarified that the price of saada roti (plain roti), which is a staple for the lower-income class, remains unchanged at 14 rupees. He also assured that if the government intervenes and fine flour is supplied at the old rates, the prices of naan and khameeri roti will be reduced.
